Nine Skies is a French progressive rock band whose music blends elements of rock, pop, progressive and jazz to create atmospheric, story-driven concept albums. The band released its debut album, Return Home, in November 2017. The record presents a modern musical narrative set in a contemporary city, exploring the lives of different characters through the perspective of a central protagonist. Moving between metaphor and realism, the album reflects on the contradictions of modern society and the ways individuals learn to live with personal struggles. Their second album, Sweetheart Grips (2019), marked a significant step forward. Featuring vocalist Aliénor Favier, the ambitious double concept album explores the psychological trauma of a young soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress. Inspired by the historical practice during the Second World War in which soldiers placed photographs of loved ones beneath the grips of their pistols — known as “sweetheart grips” — the album contrasts the brutality of war with the humanity that persists within it. The record also features guest musicians including Craig Blundell (Steven Wilson, Steve Hackett), Clive Nolan (Arena, Pendragon), Dave Foster (Steve Rothery Band), Riccardo Romano (RanestRane), Pat Sanders (Drifting Sun) and Johnny Marter (SAS Band, Marillion). In 2021, Nine Skies released 5.20, a more intimate, largely acoustic album built around a string quartet. The record features appearances by Steve Hackett (Genesis), John Hackett and Damian Wilson (Ayreon, Threshold), and explores reflective and poetic themes through delicate arrangements and atmospheric compositions. The band returned in 2023 with The Lightmaker, a conceptual album telling the story of Rudy, a character living his 1001st and final life. Through multiple perspectives and ncarnations, the album reflects on memory, identity and the human condition. Created as a tribute to the late guitarist Eric Bouillette, the record also features guest appearances from Marco Minnemann, Adam Holzman, John Mitchell, Kristoffer Gildenlöw, Riccardo Romano, Charlie Bramald, Martin Wilson, Arnaud Quevedo. The album’s track “The Dreamer” received international recognition when it was named Prog Track of the Week by Prog Magazine, further establishing the band within the modern progressive rock scene. With several acclaimed releases and collaborations with leading figures in progressive music, Nine Skies continues to develop a distinctive sound combining storytelling, atmosphere and ambitious musical arrangements. The band toured France in 2023 in support of The Lightmaker, with Riccardo Romano on vocals.
